User Services Librarian or Specialist, Full Time

Johnson City Public Library’s User Services Department has an opening for a Programming Librarian/Specialist. A staff member in this position’s primary area of focus is the planning and implementation of programs to engage the community in ways that reflect the library’s mission and values. They provide information and research help, readers’ advisory, and technology assistance to the public and ensure compliance with library policies and procedures. This employee provides instruction on library and computer usage, reference and instruction for staff and the public, and may serve on committees. They provide guidance and support for library assistants and clerks, and they oversee the User Services area of the library when acting as the senior staff on duty. All work is evaluated through conferences and observations for soundness of judgment, innovation, and initiative in developing the assigned areas. 

User Services is seeking an approachable and self-motivated Librarian or Library Specialist who is outgoing with excellent interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and a working knowledge of library methods, instruction, and technology. This person must be detail oriented and well organized. A person in this position is expected to provide and model quality customer service. They must have the ability to work effectively and courteously with the public, work independently, and with a team under the direction of the Assistant Director of User Services. They must possess strong communication, networking, and creative thinking skills. Candidates at the rank of Librarian will:

  • Develop long-term programming strategies and forward-thinking program initiatives
  • Maintain program policies and best practices
  • Assist with strategies to promote library programs, working closely with the library’s Marketing Coordinator
  • Assume a more active role as a departmental leader

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to plan, organize, promote, and manage programs for adults. Knowledge of the principles and practices of library science and the ability to instruct others in the applications of these principles and practices. Knowledge of and desire to explore trends and innovations in the field. Ability to plan and direct the work of staff engaged in providing reference services, collection development, adult programming, digital literacy instruction, and marketing. Ability to supervise the Adult Services area of the library. Has excellent communication skills and presents ideas effectively orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all library personnel and the public.

Desirable Experience and Education: 

Librarian: A master’s degree in library science and is required. Applicable programming experience is desired.

Specialist: A bachelor’s degree in a related field is required. Applicable programming experience is required.

ADA REQUIREMENTS

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Tasks may involve some physical effort, including standing and walking, frequent light lifting (5-10 pounds), or other restricted physical activities.  Manual dexterity is needed in the use of fingers, limbs, or body in the operation of office equipment. This position involves extended periods of sitting at a computer. This position may require driving the library vehicle.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:  Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes).

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:  Task requires sound perception and discrimination.  Task requires visual perception and discrimination. Task requires oral communications ability.

Hours: Full-time, evening and weekend work is required

Classification and compensation: This is a 40 hour per week non-exempt position; Librarian: $40,207 annual salary; Specialist: $36,538 Competitive benefits package that includes paid vacation, sick, and holiday leave; medical, dental, vision, life insurance as well as retirement benefits.
