Public Experience Manager, Full Time

A staff member in this position organizes and manages the Circulation Department of the library, in addition this staff member directs circulation functions at all public service desks and oversees the design of specific user experiences as they relate to library service. The Public Experience Manager works with the director and staff to establish and demonstrate best practices in guest service. The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the observation, evaluation, and training of all employees assigned to their supervision and the smooth and procedurally correct operations of the circulation department and circulation processes library wide. The Public Experience Manager leads the User Services Committee for the Library. This employee is experienced enough to be involved in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of all areas of departmental and library activities. Work is performed under general direction from the Director. All work is evaluated through conferences and observations for soundness of judgment, innovation, and initiative in managing the assigned areas.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Models the highest level of customer service to library guests.
  • Directs, trains, schedules, and supervises, and evaluates the staff members of the Circulation Department.
  • Trains and aids staff who work at public service desks in the areas of circulation and customer service
  • Monitors usage and maintenance of the library collection.
  • Develops goals and objectives for Circulation and public service and participates in long-range planning for the library.
  • Provides circulation services to the public.
  • Prepares all relevant reports and statistics in the ILS.
  • Leads the User Experience Committee
  • Opens and closes the building.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of library science. Ability to plan, organize, and manage a public library circulation department and public service desks.

Ability to supervise the use of specialized library methods and principles of circulation and reference services. Ability to maintain complex records. Ability to plan and direct the work of staff engaged in carrying out circulation services, including checking materials in and out, handling billing and holds notification, keeping the collection in order, managing the outside materials return and courier system, and more.  Ability to present ideas effectively orally and in writing. Ability to interpret rules, regulations, policies, and make decisions using sound judgement in accordance with precedent.  Ability to maintain a positive attitude in high-pressure situations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the director, other library department managers, library personnel, and the public.

Desirable Experience and Education:  A Master’s degree in Library Science is preferred. A working knowledge of TLC’s LS2Staff is preferred.

Relevant experience in office management, library circulation, or public service is preferred.

A bachelor’s degree is required.
