Do you have an aspiring artist in your family? In Art Explorers, our monthly program for ages 8-12, kids get to explore art history through hands-on creative projects.

In each session kids learn about a famous historical or contemporary artist. They discover the most important and fun facts about the artist and the iconic style they use. Then kids get to try out the featured artistic style for themselves.

Library Assistant Mirissa Walters leads the program. She says, “My hope is that in creating something they can take with them, kids will retain and appreciate what they’ve learned about the artists and their works.”

The next Art Explorers meets Friday, Feb. 14 at 4 p.m. in the Library’s Jones Meeting Center. Registration is required; click here to sign up.

We’ll learn about the contemporary artist Xenobia Bailey, who crochets and weaves yarn to create stunning artworks and installations. Her work, inspired by rural and urban African-American homemakers, is a celebration of colors, patterns, textures, and forms.

To experiment with Bailey’s style in Art Explorers, kids will create circle weaves using yarn and paper plates.

Registration is required for Art Explorers. You can sign up here for the session on Friday, Feb. 14.
