Your Library is hosting a traveling exhibition called “Confronting Violence: Improving Women’s Lives” in partnership with ETSU’s Quillen College of Medicine Library.

The exhibition will be on display in the Library’s second-floor Buffalo Mountain Room from Sunday, Sept. 29-Saturday, Oct. 5.

The exhibition, which was produced by the National Library of Medicine (NLM), chronicles and celebrates the story of nurses who fought for reform in the medical field’s approach to violence against women.

According to NLM’s companion website for the exhibition, nurses began pushing for domestic violence to be recognized as a significant and urgent health crisis for women in the late 1970s.

Nurses were in a unique position to see and address domestic violence; in both their research and practice, nurses were on the frontlines of the epidemic. They saw not only the devastating effects of violence, but also the neglect that women who were battered experienced from their health care providers.

For the last 50 years, nurses have advocated, educated, and organized for change in the medical community. They were among the first health care providers to identify and respond to domestic violence victims, creating and implementing hospital protocols for treating women who were battered.

Your Library is hosting this exhibition to raise awareness about the serious issue of domestic violence and to celebrate the health care professionals who have been advocating for medical reform for almost half a century.

Assistant Director of User Services Wendy Day says, “We’re honored to host this display, which shares stories of those working to make women’s lives better and inspires communities to act in creating a safer, more equitable world.”
