Your Library is holding a free Lunar New Year celebration for all ages on Saturday, Feb. 10 from 4:30-6 p.m. in the Library’s Jones Meeting Center.
Lunar New Year is a holiday celebrated in China and other parts of Asia that marks the first day of the new lunar calendar. In 2024, the holiday begins on Saturday, Feb. 10.
Children’s Librarian Jennifer Johnson says that the Library is holding a Lunar New Year celebration because “we strive to create an inviting space that represents the wealth of diversity in Johnson City through our collections, services, and programs.”
Jennifer explains that the Library’s event is meant both for people who celebrate the holiday as part of their culture and for those who want to learn more about it.
“We hope to create not only a space for families who celebrate Lunar New Year to meet, mingle, and experience all the Library has to offer, but also to provide an educational experience for those who may want to learn more about the holiday and how it is observed in other countries.”
At the Library’s Lunar New Year celebration, people can drop in between 4:30-6 p.m. to participate in rich cultural activities and experiences facilitated by the Tri-Cities Chinese Association (TCCA) and the Japan Outreach Initiative (JOI).
The event will offer something for every age. TCCA members will lead calligraphy sessions and showcase traditional Chinese clothing. Representatives from JOI will teach people how to make matcha tea and origami art. Attendees can also learn more about community organizations and other cultural events in Johnson City.
Library staff will be on hand to share books and resources about the holiday and the countries that celebrate it. We’ll also provide materials for people to create dragon puppets and luminaries.
