Circulation Clerk I, Full Time

Johnson City Public Library Circulation Department has an opening for a Circulation Clerk I. The circulation department is the first touchpoint of service in the library.  Staff in this position are expected to offer a high level of welcoming customer service to library guests in a fast-paced environment. Primary responsibilities include assisting patrons with circulation function through curbside pick-up and the circulation desk, collection of library usage statistical data, readers advisory, and may include shelving. Duties are performed under the close direction of a supervisor; all work is evaluated through conferences and observations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides a welcoming first point of service to the public.
  • Provides circulation services to the public at the circulation desk and curbside pick-up; including checking materials in and out, taking payments for fines and fees for lost and damaged items, hold notifications, registering new patrons and maintaining patron data
  • Processes both outgoing and incoming courier shipments
  • Retrieving the outdoor book return
  • May shelve incoming materials
  • May assist in ongoing shelf maintenance and shifting in the library
  • Moves and stores library property
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to provide friendly and quality customer service in a fast-paced setting. Ability to follow set procedures and routines in an accurate manner. Working knowledge of standard library techniques, practices, and procedures. Ability to work alone at times and to maintain all departmental operations.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library personnel and the public. Knowledge of the practical application of computer operations and procedures.

Desirable Experience and Education: Graduation from high school or GED and any combination of experience and training in the clerical field which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform tasks with computers, cash handling, etc. preferred. Public library experience is preferred.

ADA REQUIREMENTS

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Task involves routine physical effort, i.e., some standing and walking, frequent light lifting, stretching, climbing, pushing, pulling (5-40+ pounds); manual dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs, or body in the operation of shop and office equipment; may involve extended periods of sitting at a keyboard.

Work at the Circulation Desk demands some repetitive motions.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:  Task is regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes). Occasional exposure to wind, rain, snow, or hot or cold temperatures during outdoor book drop retrieval and curbside pick-up. 

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:  Task requires sound perception and discrimination.  Task requires visual perceptions and discrimination.  Task requires oral communications ability.

This is a full-time (40 hours per week) non-exempt position with fringe benefits. Starting pay in this classification is $11.18 per hour.
